“The students of Marianne's Crossing are all daughters of powerful and influential people, and that is the only reason that they are not in prison. The institution serves as school, prison, and rehab for girls who refuse to behave by society's rules.
When one girl causes a chemical spill, it leaves only a few people unaffected by the horrible transformations. Now only the most violent and clever girls are left to try and make their way from the deepest sub-basement through the blood-thirsty maniac hordes. The bad girls get to play by their own rules in this story of survival, and no one may get out alive.” The above is a synopsis for BROKEN GIRLS a graphic novel from Ancient Squid Media. Broken Girls releases in September, though you can already pre-order your copies today. Yes, copies, as in plural, because at a price of only $10 why leave your horror library lacking. We got in touch with the authors of Broken Girls and threw a few questions at them. They in turn were kind enough to throw answers back void of the usual profanity and name calling I’m used to getting with my dumb questions. Be sure to check out the official site for Broken Girls, HERE, where you can preview some pages from the comic. Now, the Q & A with authors Rob Beales and Cuitla Huezo. What's the page count on Broken Girls? Rob Beales: “Before we get into all the technical details we want to thank you for having us here.” Cuitla Huezo: “Yes, thank you. Broken Girls is a fast-paced 100 pages with tons of satisfying action and violence. There’s some extra stuff, too.” Rob: “Some penciled pages, a bonus pin-up, recipes, coupons, my uncensored diary entries, and…” Cuitla: “Shut up. He’s just kidding everybody. There aren’t any coupons.” Are the bloodthirsty maniacs of the story intelligent? Rob: “These maniacs are all over place, which is what keeps the characters scrambling for their lives. Some of the crazies are feral – all claws and teeth – while others show signs of a sinister intelligence.” Cuitla: “So individually they might be smart enough to sneak up on you, but in groups they’re like a pack of rabid dogs. In either case, I’d run for my life while leaving a trail of poo behind me.” Are you daydreaming about a movie version yet? Who would play who? Rob: “It’s funny you say that. We’re really happy with how the book has a strong cinematic feel to it.” Cuitla: “There are lots of moments where you’re turning the page and it’s a big reveal, like the “camera” is swinging around to show you something shocking and awesome.” Rob: “I haven’t thought about casting, though…How about Dario Argento to direct?” Cuitla: “Nice. Oh oh, and we could have Asia Argento in it, too. But I get nervous around “adult film actresses” and when I feel nervous I get real farty . Rob: “Next question!“ I read there was nudity in it, underage comic nudity? Or are these girls legal? Cuitla: “It’s legal. It’s all completely, sexfully legal.” Rob: “I’m not sure “sexfully” is a word, but it is the right word.” Cuitla: “But that’s just one wonderful detail. I like to point out that Broken Girls is born from the spirit of seedy pulp novels and stories like Battle Royale and 28 Days Later. Rest assured there’s a healthy blend of everything you love about horror.” Would you say males are the target audience, or are there any heroines women could identify with? Rob: “I’d say anybody who likes strong female characters is going to enjoy Broken Girls. The main character, Jesse, is the kind of girl who plows through life head-butting anything in her way.” Cuitla: “Jesse’s a true rebel. And the other characters she is forced to team up with are just as bad-ass.” Rob: “So, sure, there’s definitely some things guys are going to like more, but I think the book will be just as accessible to the ladies.” Are there any noticeable differences in your writing style and that of your co-author? Cuitla: “For me, the book’s relentless pace makes it a standout title. Once the shit hits the fan the characters – and the reader – won’t have a moment to breathe. The only time someone stops fighting or running is when they’re dead.” Rob: “Yeah, it’s definitely our style to keep ramping up the action and the stakes until you’re not sure what’s going to happen next.” How many copies get printed out in the initial run for such a project? Cuitla: “The print run is based entirely on the orders from comic shops across the country. So head over to your local shop right now and order Broken Girls. Order a few dozen copies and keep them handy as gifts for unexpected birthdays and anniversaries.” Rob: “If your local shop is a pain in the ass to get to, try the usual online comic retailers. We’ll even have a short list of online stores at our website, www.ancientsquid.com.” What would you say about the art of the book and of the artist who worked on it? Rob: “The artist, Roy Anthony Amado and his team at IMedia Arts, did an incredible job working with our script.” Cuitla: “There are no grey tones, so everything has a dark, moody look. And the gore! You’re going to read the book and think it was in full color.” Rob: “Or think it was printed in blood.” Other than Broken Girls, what are some comics horror fans should be checking out? Rob: “That’s tough. Right now there are tons of independent horror comics on the shelves. I’d just want people to try out anything and everything from independent publishers.” Cuitla: “I want to see more horror fans getting into comic shops. They’re so full of “normal” comic readers these days. Buy more comics! Or just buy lots of our comics!” Rob: “And thanks again for talking to us about the book we’re really excited.” Cuitla: “You can taste that excitement. It’s a delicate mix of tangy, sour, and caramel. Look for the book to be in stores by the end of September!” - Wes Laurie |
